The atrioventricular (AV) system is a set of pathways of the heart that ensure synchronous contraction of the atria and ventricles, and also help prevent atrioventricular arrhythmias. The atrioventricular node is a collection of fibers in the atrioventricular zone that prevents the propagation of electrical signals bypassing the conduction system of the heart between different parts of the ventricles. The atrioventricular pathways form a circle, which represents the circulation of electrical impulses through the atria and ventricles of the heart. This cycle begins in the left atrium, where the impulse is transmitted to the atrial myocardium via the bundle of His and its branches (Purkey fibers).
