Bronchopneumonia

Bronchopneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs that affects the airways (bronchi) and lung tissue (alveoli). It is usually caused by a bacterial infection, but can also be caused by viruses, fungi and parasites.

Bronchopneumonia often occurs in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Main symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath and chest pain. Auscultation of the lungs reveals wheezing.

The diagnosis is made based on the clinical picture, as well as the results of a chest x-ray and sputum tests. Treatment includes antibiotics, oxygen therapy, bronchodilators, and supportive care. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.

The prognosis depends on the patient's age and concomitant diseases. In healthy adults, bronchopneumonia is usually mild and responds well to treatment. Elderly people and patients with chronic diseases may have a less favorable prognosis. Timely treatment is critical to recovery.
