Prepatellar Bursitis

Prepatellar bursitis, also known as maids' knee, is an inflammation of the lining of the bursa (bursa) located in front of the kneecap. This bursa cushions the pressure and friction of the kneecap against the bone when the knee flexes and extends.

Causes

The main causes are excessive stress on the knees during frequent flexion and extension, as well as prolonged pressure on the knees during standing occupations. Risk factors include occupations that require prolonged standing or kneeling (maids, cleaners, tilers, gardeners). A knee injury may also be the cause.

Symptoms

  1. Pain and swelling in front of the patella
  2. Pain on pressure
  3. Limited knee mobility
  4. Redness and warmth in the area of swelling
  5. Crunching or creaking in the knee when moving

Diagnostics

The diagnosis is made on the basis of complaints, examination and palpation data. An MRI or ultrasound of the knee may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment

  1. Stopping the activity that causes the injury.
  2. Applying ice to reduce pain and swelling.
  3. NSAIDs for pain relief.
  4. A bandage or knee brace for unloading the knee.
  5. Physiotherapy.
  6. Puncture of the bursa and removal of fluid in case of severe swelling.
  7. Surgical treatment if conservative treatment is not effective.

Prevention consists of using knee pads and knee braces to unload the joint, as well as maintaining correct workplace ergonomics.
