Cannabism (Latin Cannabis, from ancient Greek κάννabos “hemp” or “capsicum”) is the collective name of plants from the genus Hemp of the Madder family (Cannabaceae); includes the genus Hemp (Cannabis) and some species of the genus Indian canary (C. indica), containing psychoactive compounds. Previously, plants of this genus were classified as members of the Solanaceae family. Modern taxonomy considers some scientific species to be classified in the genus Cannabis within the genus Hemp, while others deserve to be separated into separate genera within the family.
