Chlorpromazine is a phenothiazine derivative, an antipsychotic of moderate strength; a specific tricyclic antidepressant with alpha1-adrenergic blocking activity. In terms of analgesic properties it is 2 times inferior to reserpine; in terms of anxiolytic action, chlorpromazine is inferior to ethanol, cyclobarbital and diazepam. Unlike reserpine, it causes a moderate stimulating effect on the central nervous system.

The drug has a complex antipsychotic, sedative, anxiolytic, antihistamine, hypothermic and adrenolytic effect. It has an antihypoxic effect, increases the body's resistance to various chemical influences. The antipsychotic effect is due to blockade of D2 receptors, catalytic disturbances in catecholamine metabolism, and blockade of H1 receptors. Sedative effects are associated with depression of the central nervous system, analgesic and emetic effects are associated with blockade
