Chronic tonsillitis

Chronic tonsillitis

Chronic tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils that lasts more than one month. This disease occurs in both children and adults. The main causative agents of chronic tonsillitis are streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, and adenoviruses. Although acute tonsillitis is often the cause, chronic tonsillitis cannot be considered only a complication of acute inflammation.

The occurrence of chronic tonsillitis is associated with complex mechanisms. Under the influence of infection, the body undergoes a restructuring and an allergy to bacterial pathogens develops (autoallergy). Food particles, dead cells, and microorganisms accumulate in the lacunae of the tonsils, forming a focus of chronic inflammation and long-term allergization. Factors such as hypothermia, smoking, dust, can provoke an exacerbation.

It is difficult to diagnose chronic tonsillitis right away. The patient complains of frequent sore throats with high fever. The general condition is characterized by lethargy, increased fatigue, sweating, and headaches. There is an unpleasant sensation in the throat and bad breath. When swallowing, pain occurs, radiating to the ear. Upon examination, pus is visible in the lacunae and inflamed follicles. But sometimes a sore throat may be absent.

Complications of chronic tonsillitis - rheumatism, polyarthritis. The doctor selects the treatment. Includes rinsing with antiseptics, washing the tonsils, Lugol applications. Prescribe UHF, UV, laser, electrophoresis. In severe cases, tonsillectomy, laser or cryosurgery is performed.
