An overdose of Novo-passit is a pathological condition caused by improper or uncontrolled use of the drug, which has very negative consequences for the body. In the most severe cases, Novo-passit poisoning can lead to the death of the victim.
The content of the articleBasic information
Novopassit is a herbal remedy that has a pronounced sedative and anti-anxiety effect. The sedative effect is provided by the extracts of medicinal plants and guaifenesin (anxiolytic, tranquilizer) included in the drug.
Release forms and dosage regimen of the drug
Novo-passit is available in two dosage forms: tablets and oral solution.
Adult patients and children over 12 years of age are prescribed 1 tablet. (or 5 ml of solution) 3 times a day. Liquid Novo-passit is completely ready for use. In some cases, it is possible to dilute the solution with a small volume of water.
The medicine is taken half an hour before meals, however, if nausea, heartburn and/or abdominal pain occurs, it is recommended to drink the medicine during meals. If negative symptoms do not go away or the sedative effect manifests itself too intensely (depression of consciousness, marked decrease in concentration, absent-mindedness), then the dose should be reduced exactly by half. If this does not allow you to feel normal, you should refuse treatment altogether, since you may have an allergy to Novo-Passit or intolerance to the drug.
The recommended course of treatment is 7-10 days. By the end of this period, the maximum therapeutic effect is achieved. Extension of the course is possible up to 2-6 weeks.
How long can you take Novo-passit and how does it work?
After a single dose of the drug, a slight sedative effect appears after half an hour to an hour. Taking Novo-passit with food prolongs the period of absorption of active substances in the small intestine; on an empty stomach this process “goes” faster.
The peak effectiveness of the drug action occurs 1.5-3 hours after a single dose. The half-life of active substances, in particular guaifenesin, is 1.5-2 hours. Therefore, 6-8 hours after taking the drug, only a residual sedative effect on the body will be felt. Novo-passit is excreted by the kidneys in the form of inactive compounds during the day.
Indications for use
The drug is prescribed for the correction and treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders:
- fatigue, irritability, feelings of fear and anxiety;
- constant and prolonged emotional overstrain (“manager syndrome”);
- panic attacks; The lethal dose of Novopassit has not been precisely established, but it is assumed that three times exceeding the recommended volume can provoke very negative consequences.
Providing first aid for an overdose of Novo-passit
The sooner first aid is provided to the patient, the faster and easier he will come out of this pathological condition. Algorithm of actions:
- Call an ambulance yourself or with the help of others.
- Remove the medicine by extensive gastric lavage. You can rinse your stomach without using a special device and before doctors arrive. You need to drink up to 2 glasses of water at once, and then press your index and middle fingers on the root of your tongue. This action will provoke vomiting. The manipulation should be repeated several times, ideally until the wash water is clean.
- Take any of the drugs that slow down the absorption of toxic substances and accelerate their elimination from the body: Remember that first aid is more effective if it is provided within two hours after poisoning.
Treatment
Further treatment of intoxication with Novo-passit involves eliminating negative manifestations symptom-by-symptomatically:
- if respiratory function is impaired, artificial ventilation is performed;
- detoxification therapy with Flumazenil (non-specific antidote);
- blood purification (hemosorption, hemodialysis) according to indications;
- antihistamine therapy with Suprastin, Tavegil, etc.
Consequences of an overdose of Novo-passit
The doctor should warn the patient about what will happen in case of Novopassit poisoning at the time of prescribing the drug.
- Exceeding the dose of guaifenesin provokes the development of renal failure.
- From the side of the central nervous system: emotional lability (instability).
- From the cardiovascular system: heart rhythm disturbances.
- From the gastrointestinal tract: increased acidity of gastric juice (heartburn), stool disorders (diarrhea, constipation).
- From the urinary system: an increase in the average daily volume of urine.
- Allergic reactions: urticaria, anaphylactic shock.
Novopassit is an effective drug for the treatment and prevention of various neuropsychiatric disorders. Although it is available in pharmacies without a prescription, this does not mean that the medicine can be self-prescribed. Considering the strong sedative effect of the drug and the possibility of developing allergic reactions, before using Novo-passit you need to consult a specialist.
