Chylectasia

Chylectasia is an enlargement of the ducts of the pancreas and small intestine through which lymph (chyle) flows.

Causes of chylectasia:

  1. Congenital anomaly of the development of lymphatic vessels.

  2. Chronic inflammatory diseases of the pancreas, intestines, peritoneum.

  3. Tumor processes in the abdominal cavity.

  4. Injuries of the pancreas and intestines.

  5. Parasitic infestations (ascariasis).

Symptoms of chylectasia:

  1. Pain and heaviness in the upper abdomen.

  2. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea with large amounts of fat in the stool (steatorrhea).

  3. Malabsorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins.

  4. Weight loss and exhaustion.

Diagnosis is based on ultrasound, CT, and MRI data of the abdominal organs.

Treatment of chylectasia consists of eliminating the causes of the disease, nutritional support, and replacement therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

The prognosis with timely treatment is favorable. Complications may include malnutrition and the development of chylothorax.
