Complications of liver cirrhosis
Liver cirrhosis is a severe chronic disease in which fibrosis and deformation of the liver develop. Cirrhosis often leads to various complications that threaten the patient's life.
The main complications of liver cirrhosis:
-
Bleeding from esophageal varices. Due to increased pressure in the portal vein, the veins of the esophagus dilate. This can lead to vein rupture and massive bleeding.
-
Peritonitis. Patients with cirrhosis often develop ascites, an accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. This contributes to the development of inflammation of the peritoneum - peritonitis.
-
Hepatic coma. With decompensation of liver function, hepatic coma may develop - a disturbance of consciousness associated with toxic damage to the brain.
-
Liver cancer. Cirrhosis significantly increases the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma, a primary liver cancer.
To prevent complications of cirrhosis, it is important to follow your doctor’s recommendations, undergo regular examinations, and promptly identify and treat complications. If alarming symptoms appear, urgent hospitalization is necessary.
