Dexamethasone sodium phosphate: properties, use and contraindications

Dexamethasone sodium phosphate is a drug with glucocorticosteroid activity produced in Germany by the pharmaceutical company Rotechmedica LLC. It is widely used in medicine to treat various diseases.

Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid that has anti-inflammatory, antiallergic and immunosuppressive effects. It suppresses the body's immune response, which helps reduce inflammation and tissue swelling.

Dexamethasone sodium phosphate is available as an injection solution at a concentration of 5 mg/ml. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  1. Addison's disease;
  2. congenital adrenal hypoplasia;
  3. adrenal insufficiency (usually in combination with mineralocorticoids);
  4. adrenogenital syndrome;
  5. thyroiditis (acute, subacute);
  6. hypothyroidism;
  7. tumor hypercalcemia;
  8. shock (anaphylactic, post-traumatic, postoperative, cardiogenic, blood transfusion, etc.);
  9. rheumatoid arthritis in the acute phase;
  10. acute rheumatic carditis;
  11. collagenoses (rheumatic diseases; disseminated lupus erythematosus, etc.);
  12. inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the joints (arthritis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, epicondylitis, styloiditis, osteochondrosis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc.);
  13. myositis;
  14. infectious-allergic bronchial asthma;
  15. status asthmaticus (i.v., i.m.);
  16. allergic and anaphylactoid reactions, incl. caused by drugs;
  17. dermatitis (contact, atopic, exfoliative, blistering, herpetiformis, seborrheic, etc.);
  18. psoriasis;
  19. eczema;
  20. exudative erythema multiforme;
  21. pemphigus;
  22. mycosis fungoides;
  23. erythroderma and other skin diseases;
  24. cerebral edema (with tumors, traumatic brain injury, neurosurgical intervention, cerebral hemorrhage, encephalitis, meningitis, radiation damage to the lungs (IV, IM);
  25. nonspecific ulcerative colitis;
  26. hepatitis;
  27. sarcoidosis;
  28. berylliosis;
  29. leukemia and lymphoma (including lymphogranulomatosis);
  30. hormonally active tumors (adrenal glands, ovaries, breast, etc.);
  31. acute and chronic adrenal insufficiency in severe infections and injuries.

For each specific case of using dexamethasone sodium phosphate, it is necessary to individually select the dose and regimen based on the patient’s age, weight, health status and severity of the disease.

Like any other drug, dexamethasone sodium phosphate has a number of contraindications that should be taken into account when using it. This is first of all:

  1. hypersensitivity to dexamethasone or other components of the drug;
  2. fungal infections of the eyes and ears;
  3. viral eye infections;
  4. herpetic eye infection;
  5. glaucoma;
  6. acute herpetic keratitis;
  7. peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum;
  8. mental disorders;
  9. history of severe mental illness;
  10. active form of tuberculosis;
  11. availability of a vaccine against the chickenpox virus;
  12. children up to 6 months (for injections).

In addition, dexamethasone sodium phosphate may cause a number of side effects, including increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose levels, cardiovascular problems, digestive system problems, increased risk of infections, endocrine system problems, dysfunction nervous system, etc. Therefore, the use of dexamethasone sodium phosphate should be carried out only under the supervision of a physician and in strict compliance with the instructions for use.
