Diprazine: use, side effects and contraindications

Diprazine, also known internationally as promethazine, is a histamine H1 receptor blocker that is widely used in medicine to treat many diseases. The drug is produced in Russia by Ferein and is available as a 2.5% injection solution.

Promethazine is the active substance in Diprazine and is used to treat allergic reactions such as allergic dermatoses, prurigo, eczema, exudative diathesis, urticaria, rash and other skin reactions to drugs and chemicals, as well as itching, allergic conjunctivitis, rhinitis, hay fever, bites insects and angioedema. The drug is also effective for the treatment of diseases of the nervous system, such as anxiety, neuroses, neurosis-like conditions, psychosis, insomnia, extrapyramidal disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, migraine, chorea, hyperthermia, Meniere's syndrome, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, motion sickness syndrome.

Diprazine can also be used as a sedative for artificial hibernation, potentiation of anesthesia and local anesthesia, as well as for studying gastric secretion when used as a histamine secretagogue.

However, despite many beneficial properties, Diprazine has a number of contraindications. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to the drug, coma, alcohol intoxication, liver failure, jaundice, prostatic hypertrophy, predisposition to urinary retention, bladder neck stenosis, angle-closure glaucoma, peptic ulcer with pyloroduodenal obstruction, diseases of the lower respiratory tract, epilepsy, syndrome sleep apnea, Reye's syndrome, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 2 years of age and old age.

Side effects may occur when using Diprazine. From the nervous system and sensory organs, sedation, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, agitation, nightmares, increased sleep apnea, rarely - disorientation, confusion, extrapyramidal disorders, increased convulsive readiness, hyperactivity may be observed. From the cardiovascular system, hypotension, tachycardia, and arrhythmias may be observed. From the digestive system, dry mouth, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may occur. Allergic reactions may also occur, including skin rash, itching, urticaria, and angioedema.
