Dobrotvorsky Symptom

Dobrotvorsky symptom is a clinical sign of impaired nerve function, a localized lesion, leading to increased muscle tone and the appearance of spasticity. The method for detecting this phenomenon was developed by Doctor of Neurology V.I. Dobrotvorsky. It is still used in the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders and peripheral nerve injuries.

The phenomenon was discovered during a stroke by scientists at the Preobrazhensky Institute. Vasily Ivanovich Dobrotvorsky described a paralyzed arm and leg that could not bend or straighten. He noticed that after a sharp blow to the knee with a hammer, the patient experienced contraction in the calf and thigh, as well as the elbow and forearm. The hand was able to hold the object for a couple of seconds. Subsequently, similar contractions occurred without a hammer - when contracting the muscles of the arm or leg. While working with the mouse, movement disorders appeared. The patient could not quickly move the mouse cursor to one place. He needed to make a smooth transition by touching the key several times.
