Erythrocyte sedimentation rate

**Erythrocyte sedimentation rate** (ESR) is a value that characterizes the speed of movement of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the capillary bed until they settle on the surface of the bottom of the test tube. In order for the study to be most reliable, before taking the test you should place your hand under your cheek and remain calm for a few minutes. Another important aspect is to refrain from eating and drinking at least 2 hours before the examination. Blood ESR is measured so that, based on the results of this clinical blood test, it is possible to diagnose the presence of a particular disease, as well as monitor the treatment process and adjust the therapy. It is known that with age, ESR levels decrease somewhat and normalize only by 50-60 years. This is especially clearly seen in women, so we can conclude that male cells are more viable than female ones.
