Polypous fibroma (f. polyposum) is a benign tumor consisting of connective tissue. It is characterized by the formation of multiple polypoid growths of the mucous membrane of various organs.
It is most often found in the gastrointestinal tract, less often in the respiratory tract, bladder and other organs. Polyps come in different sizes - from a few millimeters to several centimeters. Their number can vary from single to hundreds and thousands.
The causes of polypous fibroma are not completely clear. In some cases, the disease is hereditary. Risk factors are chronic inflammatory diseases, mechanical irritation of the mucous membrane.
Clinical manifestations depend on the location and number of polyps. Pain, organ dysfunction, bleeding, and inflammation may occur. Diagnosed using endoscopic and histological research methods.
Treatment usually involves removing the polyps and monitoring to prevent recurrences. If the lesion is severe, surgery may be required. The prognosis is generally favorable, but in some forms malignant degeneration of polyps is possible.
