Glaucoma acute
Acute glaucoma is a dangerous eye disease characterized by a sharp increase in intraocular pressure, which leads to damage to the optic nerve and blindness if emergency measures are not taken.
Causes of development of acute glaucoma:
- Blockage of the angle of the anterior chamber of the eye due to disturbances in the structure of the iris or lens. This prevents the outflow of intraocular fluid.
- Dilation of the pupil, for example during a sudden transition into darkness.
- Taking certain medications.
- Eye injuries.
Symptoms of acute glaucoma:
- Sharp pain in the eye, worse at night.
- Redness of the eye.
- A sharp decrease in vision.
- Headache, nausea, vomiting.
Acute glaucoma must be treated urgently - this is a matter of preserving vision. Treatment includes:
- Reducing intraocular pressure with eye drops and tablets.
- Laser or surgery to improve the drainage of intraocular fluid.
Thus, acute glaucoma is a vision-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment. If suspicious symptoms appear, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
