**Strangulated hernia** is a syndrome in which increased internal abdominal pressure pushes part of the intestine or peritoneum through a defect in the abdominal wall directly out of the abdominal cavity (extraperitoneal). This leads to a typical picture of pain (pain of a diffuse nature along the intestine), requires urgent surgical intervention, and can result in the development of necrosis of the intestine or other vital organs with an extremely unfavorable prognosis.
