Ifizol: description, use and side effects

Ifizol (Cefazolin) is a member of the group of first-generation cephalosporins used to treat infections. This drug is manufactured in India by Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories.

The dosage form of Ifizol is presented in the form of a solution for injection, powder for the preparation of an injection solution of 1000 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg. The active substance is Cefazolin.

Ifizol is used to treat respiratory tract infections, septicemia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, wound infections, infected burns, peritonitis and urinary and biliary tract infections. However, Ifizol should not be used in case of hypersensitivity, including to other beta-lactam antibiotics, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

When using Ifizol, side effects may occur such as: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the epigastric region, pseudomembranous colitis, increased concentrations of liver enzymes (AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, LDH) in the blood, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis , hemolytic anemia, candidomycosis, allergic manifestations (skin rashes, itching, toxic epidermal necrosis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, angioedema, anaphylactic shock), reactions at the injection site: the formation of infiltrates and abscesses, phlebitis and thrombophlebitis.

Probenecid slows down excretion and promotes the accumulation of Ifizol. You should not take oral anticoagulants and diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) simultaneously with Ifizol. In addition, caution should be exercised when prescribing this drug to patients with severe renal impairment and gastrointestinal diseases.

As of 2021, there have been no known cases of Ifizol overdose.
