The iliac spine is the largest of the paired spines of the lumbar plexus in the sacral region. Another name is the sacral spine. Usually it is absent or deformed in the first years of life. Long-term absence of the part of the sacrum in question occurs in children who have suffered meningococcal infection, in adults with purulent pleurisy, injuries, inflammatory processes in the pelvic cavity and lower extremities.
Externally, there is a retraction of the gluteal region, a sharp asymmetry of the halves of the sacrum, an increase in the angle of the sacrum on one side towards the healthy spine, and a protrusion of the hip joint on the same side. Possible swelling of the soft tissues of the front and side of the thigh.
Treatment of iliac spine deformities begins with eliminating the causes that caused the pathological changes. For example, if the reason for the formation of a defect is associated with an injury, then the corresponding damage is initially treated, and only after that they begin to correct the defect.
