Ilozon: an effective antibiotic to fight infections

Ilozone, also known by its international name Erythromycin, is a macrolide antibiotic widely used to treat a variety of infections. It belongs to the pharmaceutical group of antibiotics, including macrolides and azalides. Ilozone is manufactured by Eli Lilly in the United States and is available in various dosage forms, including an oral suspension.

Erythromycin, the main active substance of Ilozon, effectively fights various infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, atypical pneumonia, purulent-inflammatory diseases of the skin and its appendages, diphtheria, erythrasma, gonorrhea, syphilis, listeriosis, Legionnaires' disease and other diseases. A special form of ointment is also available to treat eye infections and is effective for conjunctivitis, blepharitis and trachoma.

Like any drug, Ilozon has certain contraindications. It is not recommended for hypersensitivity to components, liver disease, pregnancy and during breastfeeding (in such cases, breastfeeding must be stopped for the period of treatment). Side effects may occur when taking Ilozon, including dyspeptic disorders, liver dysfunction, seizures, hallucinations, dizziness, hearing loss, ventricular tachycardia and prolongation of the QT interval.

It is important to consider possible interactions of Ilozon with other drugs. It may potentiate the effects and toxicity of antihistamines, ergot alkaloids, theophylline, benzodiazepines, digoxin, indirect anticoagulants, carbamazepine, cyclosporine, hexobarbital, phenytoin, alfentanil, disopyramide, lovastatin and bromocriptine. Therefore, before starting treatment with Ilozon, you must consult your doctor and provide him with complete information about the medications you are taking.

If you overdose on Ilozon, serious complications may occur, such as liver dysfunction and hearing loss. Treatment of overdose includes gastric lavage, forced diuresis, and hemo- and peritoneal dialysis. It is also important to continuously monitor vital signs and seek immediate medical attention if any serious side effects or unusual symptoms occur.
