Indotard: description, use, side effects and contraindications
Indotard is an anti-inflammatory drug derived from indoleacetic acid. Its international name is Indomethacin. The medicine is produced by the Israeli pharmaceutical group STS Chemical Industries. It is available as extended-release capsules at a dosage of 75 mg.
The drug is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, synovitis, acute gouty arthritis and reactive arthritis.
Despite its effectiveness, Indotard has contraindications and may cause side effects that must be taken into account when using it.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Indotard or other NSAIDs;
- Rhinitis, conjunctivitis or bronchospasm while taking NSAIDs;
- Erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract;
- Bleeding (especially intracranial or from the gastrointestinal tract);
- Thrombocytopenia, hypocoagulation;
- Suspicion of necrotizing enterocolitis;
- Severe renal failure;
- Congenital heart defects (tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary atresia);
- Proctitis (suppositories);
- Pregnancy (teratogenicity may occur).
Side effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain;
- Erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal bleeding;
- Toxic hepatitis, constipation;
- Arterial hypertension, heart rhythm disturbances;
- Bone marrow hypoplasia, aplastic anemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, platelet dysfunction;
- Fluid retention, hyperglycemia, glucosuria, hyperkalemia;
- Itching, urticaria, exfoliative dermatitis, hair loss, erythema nodosum, Stevens-Johnson syndrome;
- Anaphylactic shock, bronchospasm, vasculitis, pulmonary edema.
In addition, Indotard may interact with other medications. It reduces the diuretic effect of potassium-sparing, thiazide and loop diuretics, and hypotension caused by beta-blockers. When taken simultaneously with other NSAIDs, the risk of side effects increases, especially with long-term use.
Before starting treatment with Indotard, you must consult your doctor and inform him about all existing diseases, medications taken and possible allergic reactions.
Overall, Indotard is an effective drug for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, but its use should be limited and supervised by a physician to avoid possible side effects and complications.
