Is it possible to make an insulin "Cocktail"?

Is it possible to make an insulin “cocktail”?

It must be said that mixing short-acting and long-acting insulin in one syringe and administering them with one injection is permissible only for drugs of the same degree of purification and acidity. Ideal for this are neutral insulins, which, when mixed, do not change each other’s properties.

When preparing an insulin “cocktail,” always draw fast-acting insulin into the syringe first. The mixture must be administered immediately after preparation, otherwise the activity of the mixed insulin may still change. You should also know that the opinions of experts regarding the mutual change in the activity of insulins “met” in one syringe differ.

Some believe that the properties of drugs remain the same, others believe that they are lost to some extent. Therefore, if the answer to the above question is important to you, conduct a small experiment. Try mixing short-acting and long-acting insulin.

If after several injections of the “cocktail” the blood sugar level does not increase, then you can continue to use an individual insulin mixture. If the method of administering different insulins in one syringe does not allow you to keep blood sugar at the desired level, stop experimenting. Draw up insulins into separate syringes and inject them into different places.

By the way, ready-made insulin “cocktails” are currently being produced, or, more correctly, insulin profiles containing short-acting and long-acting insulin in a certain ratio. These are, for example, Mixtard-NM-10, 20, 30, 40, 50. The numbers indicate the percentage of simple insulin in the mixture. These are berlinsulin-N-10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60: the first number indicates the percentage of fast-acting insulin, the second - long-acting. These are humulin-M2 and MZ (M2 - 20% short-acting, MZ - 30%). Huminsulin-profile-1, 2, 3, 4 (10, 20, 30, 40% short-acting). The use of insulin profiles is only possible in cases of stable compensated diabetes. Their main advantage is the reduction in the number of injections.
