The need to wake up very early every day in order to have time to wash your hair, because the roots have become dirty overnight, frequent itching, a feeling of visual untidiness in your hair are the main signs of increased activity of the sebaceous glands. Both sexes face this problem, but women more often. Is it possible to resolve the issue without involving a specialist?
Why is oily scalp considered a problem?
The aesthetic unattractiveness of a constantly dirty, greasy root zone, loss of volume are the main problems plaguing people suffering from excessive activity of the sebaceous glands. Already a couple of hours after washing your hair, you get a feeling of stale styling and untidiness. In particularly difficult cases, dandruff, itching, and alopecia (baldness) begin.
Reasons
Excessive sebum production, leading to a thickening of the protective lipid film on the head, can occur due to external and internal factors. Some people have had this problem since childhood and the reason for this is a genetic predisposition - it is difficult to fight it, only to level out the manifestations as much as possible. More common reasons are:
- hormonal disorders (restructuring of the body during puberty, internal changes during menopause, pregnancy or taking hormonal drugs);
- emotional overstrain, stress, lack of sleep against the background of physical fatigue;
- fungal infection of the epidermis (in this case not only excess sebum is produced, but also itching, burning, dandruff, and hair loss);
- pathologies of the endocrine and nervous system;
- gastrointestinal diseases.
During puberty, against the background of disturbances in the nervous and neuroendocrine functions of the sebaceous glands, seborrhea can also develop: it is characterized by oily skin of the face and scalp in the scalp, the appearance of blackheads on the nose, acne, and profuse dandruff. In addition to the reasons described, short-term or situational external factors can also contribute to the overactive functioning of the sebaceous glands:
- improper washing of hair (too hot water, too often, with poorly selected care products);
- poor nutrition (with excess flour, sweets);
- excess nourishing and moisturizing masks;
- bad habits (addiction to alcohol, nicotine);
- ecology, climatic conditions (dry air, high temperatures).
Oily scalp care
Most people who are faced with this problem try to level it out and wash their hair every day, because the very next morning the roots are greasy and the hairstyle looks stale. Experts are confident that such actions only aggravate the situation, forcing the sebaceous glands to work even more actively and produce even more sebum. It is important to follow a few basic rules here:
- Do not wash your hair in the evening, as the roots will become greasy overnight: it is better to do this in the morning.
- Choose the right shampoo according to your skin type: the speed of root clogging depends on it.
- When using nourishing masks (this is necessary for dry hair), apply them only to the lower half of the length, and rinse the root zone with herbal decoctions (the most useful is nettle).
Even people with increased oiliness in the root zone should wash their hair only 2 times a week, and following the correct hygiene procedure helps achieve this:
- Adjust the temperature of the water - it should not be hot, as it will make the skin even more oily (strengthen the work of the sebaceous glands), but ice-cold water can damage the hair. Cool room temperature (35-37 degrees) is considered optimal.
- Wet your hair and let it become completely moisturized: to do this, stand under the shower for a minute, lifting the roots with your fingers.
- Take a small amount of shampoo into your hand, lather with your fingertips and scoop up 1/4 of it, rub into the hairline above your forehead. The same amount is at the back of the head, and distribute the rest over the temporal zones.
- Massage the shampoo along the edge lines, carefully moving towards the crown. The product is not applied to the length: the flowing foam will work there. An exception is if you have been walking around with stale hair for several days and have actively used styling products (varnish, mousse, foam).
- After 3 minutes (it is important to maintain this time!) of this massage, rinse the roots under running water, lifting them in the same way with your fingers. Spend another minute on this.
- If your skin is very oily, steps 3-5 can be repeated again. After this, a balm or conditioner is applied along the length, departing from the roots by at least 4 fingers width. The root zone is not touched.
The final stage: rinsing with cool water or herbal decoction. Afterwards, the hair is wrung out (not curled!) in a towel and dried naturally. If you need to use a hairdryer, try not to blow hot air on the roots for a long time - heat enhances the work of the sebaceous glands. Additionally, experts advise:
- Wash all combs 2-3 times a day.
- Avoid hard water: if there is such a problem in your region, to wash your hair, leave the water to settle and boil.
- It is advisable to minimize the frequency of combing (this creates a protective film on the hair through the transfer of sebum from the roots), as well as the frequency of touching the hair.
- Remove excess length (everything below the shoulders), since hair contamination will occur even more actively.
- Refuse to use styling, perm, dyeing and creating complex hairstyles with a large number of hairpins and bobby pins. If possible, it is also better not to use curling irons and flat irons.
- If you have a very oily skin type, be sure to visit a doctor for an individual selection of a course of procedures that affects the activity of the sebaceous glands.
Masks
If you suffer from oily skin and hair, you should periodically use not only good cleansing shampoos, but also masks before washing your hair. They also help eliminate impurities, greasy shine and greasy film, normalize the water-lipid balance, can relieve irritation and inflammation, and some have a drying effect. Such masks should be free of silicones and parabens. They are used 2 times a week, the course is at least a month. Insulation with a towel is required. The most successful:
- Moroccanoil Scalp Treatment is a well-known but expensive product (RUB 1,950 for 45 ml) that regulates oil content and contains essential oils of ginger and lavender. Relieves inflammation, normalizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands with regular use. Application: apply 6 drops to the parting, rub in with massaging movements for 3 minutes. Cover with a towel and leave for 10 minutes.
- Lebel Cool Orange Scalp Conditioner - a cleanser from a Japanese brand based on plant components (an important element is orange oil), helps normalize the water-lipid balance, accelerates hair growth, and prevents hair loss. Apply up to 2 times a week, keep in the root zone for only 5 minutes. Cost – 1400 rub. for 135 g.
Shampoo for oily scalp
Experts recommend immediately putting aside 2-in-1 (and 3-in-1) products and those that are intended for all hair types - they do not remove the oily layer from the epidermis well. Professional deep cleansers should also not be touched, since they dry out the skin and are only allowed to be used once a month. Pay attention not only to the marks on the packaging, but also to the composition, which should not contain:
For oily skin and hair, selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione work well, as they perfectly cleanse and act as natural antiseptics. Ideally, choose a shampoo with an organic (natural) composition, devoid of aggressive components, has a transparent color (white will make it heavier), and has a light liquid consistency. It is applied only to the root zone, since the length can dry out, and for dandruff, a special remedy from the pharmacy is required. Change shampoos every 2 months. The most popular for oily skin:
- Bioderma Node Flu >
Balms and conditioners
For very oily skin on the scalp, experts do not recommend using balms and conditioners that have nutritional qualities - make do with moisturizing ones. If the length is dry and prone to brittleness and splitting, use additional leave-in oil emulsions on the very ends, since deep cleansing shampoos will worsen the problem. If you are actively treating oily scalp, it is advisable that balms and conditioners do not contain silicones:
- lipophilic (they become heavier when used for a long time) – cyclomethicone, dimethicone;
- high-polymer (poorly washed off) - polyquaternium-10, polyoctanium-10.
Amino-functional ones cause less harm, but are needed only by women who color their hair (the names of such silicones have the prefix “amino”). Products with proteins (rice, soy, wheat), hydrolyzed keratin, elastin, collagen have a good effect, and oils should be avoided, as in shampoos. Conditioners and balms are applied only to the length; 3-5 cm should be removed from the roots so as not to get on the skin - it will become even more oily. Effective and safe products:
- Natura Siberica Volume and balance - a balm based on natural ingredients, complements the shampoo described above. Facilitates the combing process, strengthens, moisturizes, smoothes. Price for 400 ml – 200-250 rub.
- Farmona Herbal Care Seboravit is a conditioner from a Polish manufacturer that has nourishing and strengthening properties. It reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands, improves blood circulation in the layers of the dermis, relieves irritation, so it can also be used in the root zone. Cost – 250-300 rubles. for 100 ml.
Scrub
Before washing your hair, trichologists advise cleaning the epidermis using scrubs: homemade (based on sea salt) or store-bought ones. They cannot be used if there are skin lesions, inflammations, or burns. Scrubbing is carried out 1-2 times a week, and if the oil content is not too pronounced, you can reduce the frequency to 1 time a month. Well proven:
- Natura Siberica Sea buckthorn scrub - improves blood circulation, stimulates nutrition of follicles, prevents hair loss, regulates the functioning of the sebaceous glands and fights dandruff. The rich natural composition makes the scrub safe for all hair types. It is usually used 1-2 times a week. Price – 250 rub. for 200 ml.
- Kapous Pre Treatment Absorbent mud paste - helps normalize the water-oil balance of the scalp, and with regular use eliminates oily shine. Apply the paste to the root zone for 5 minutes, then massage with water for 3-4 minutes and rinse. The cost of the product is 280 rubles. for 150 ml.
How to get rid of oily scalp using oils
Most trichologists and dermatologists advise patients to avoid oils in shampoos and balms, but such substances can be used independently. Only if you have oily skin, not all oils are suitable, especially basic (vegetable, oily) oils, which are used as a basis for masks (but not for colored hair). It is worth paying attention to:
- almond – helps strengthen hair follicles;
- burdock – stimulates growth, improves hair structure, fights dandruff;
- castor – protects the ends, regulates the activity of the sebaceous glands;
- olive – has high nutritional qualities;
- coconut – has a hard structure, requires heating, adds shine, is used as an independent product for a long-lasting mask;
- flaxseed – makes hair smooth and manageable, helps regulate the fat balance of the scalp;
- grape seed - does not create a greasy film on the skin, protects hair and helps restore it;
- Jojoba – fights dandruff and hair loss.
Basic oils can be added to homemade masks (no more than 1 teaspoon per serving), used alone on the ends, but not more than once every 2 weeks. If not only the scalp, but also the hair is oily, it is recommended to avoid base oils and use only essential oils. They are used for massage (rub 2-3 drops on your fingertips into the root zone for 3-5 minutes) and evening combing (apply 3 drops to a wooden comb). The most useful:
- lemon, patchouli – add shine and make combing easier;
- mint, eucalyptus - prolongs the feeling of freshness, helps in the fight against skin inflammation, seborrhea;
- lavender – relieves skin irritation, eliminates dandruff;
- bergamot – has an antiseptic effect, reduces the secretion of fat from the sebaceous glands;
- pine – prevents hair loss, eliminates dandruff;
- lemon balm - normalizes the functioning of the sebaceous glands;
- rosemary – has a beneficial effect on the regenerative abilities of the dermis (with seborrhea, fungal infection);
- tea tree – has antibacterial properties, dries, prolongs the feeling of cleanliness at the roots, preventing the formation of a greasy film.
Nutrition correction
Some doctors believe that the sebaceous glands may begin to produce excess oil in response to poor nutrition. For this reason, in complex treatment, attention is paid to the daily menu: fried, sweet, flour, and fatty foods are removed from it. Focus on fresh vegetables and fruits, fermented milk drinks, do not overuse meat (should be replaced with fish and seafood), cereals. If there are diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the diet is selected individually.
Professional treatments
For those who suffer from very oily scalp, itching and dandruff, there are few home methods to address the problem: doctors in such cases consider it necessary to resort to professional procedures. They must be taken in a course, since you will not see the effect from the first time. The trichologist or cosmetologist decides which one to resort to, but the most effective are:
- Galvanic peeling – helps fight oily seborrhea, dandruff, alopecia (baldness), removes exfoliated epidermis and sebum, opens pores. The procedure is carried out with a comb, the teeth of which have electrodes, and a special composition is applied to the skin. The disadvantage of the technique is its low availability (high price) and prevalence. The cost of the 1st session in Moscow is 4000-5000 rubles.
- Electromyostimulation is a hardware technique that helps balance the activity of the sebaceous glands through exposure to current pulses that promote contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. The only downside is a large number of contraindications. The cost of the 1st session is 600-1000 rubles.
- Darsonvalization is the effect of micropulses of high frequency current on the skin to normalize blood circulation in the dermis. The procedure strengthens the follicles, improves their nutrition, prevents hair loss, but has little effect on the activity of the sebaceous glands. Of all the procedures, darsonvalization is the most inexpensive: 400-900 rubles. per session.
- Electrophoresis - the introduction of vitamin solutions and antioxidants using direct current, improves blood circulation and tissue nutrition, relieves itching, but has little effect on the sebaceous glands, therefore it is a supporting procedure. Price 1st – 400-600 rub.
- Cryomassage – activation of metabolic and restoration processes in the dermis under the influence of liquid nitrogen (cold), normalization of the sebaceous glands, destruction of pathogenic bacteria. The method is effective in the treatment of seborrhea, alopecia, and severe skin itching. The disadvantage is a large number of contraindications. The duration of the session is 5-8 minutes, the full course consists of 15 procedures. Price 1st – 300-500 rub.
- Mesotherapy – involves the injection of medications that suppress the activity of the sebaceous glands. For a significant effect, you need to undergo 5-10 procedures, each lasting from half an hour to an hour. The downside is the price of the 1st session - 3500-5000 rubles, depending on the clinic.
- Ozone therapy has 2 types: injection and local. The latter involves the use of a device under which steam accumulates under a dome, and is less effective than injections (but it is painful). The procedures last 5-20 minutes, the full course consists of 10 sessions. Ozone therapy helps improve blood circulation, prevents hypoxia (oxygen starvation) of tissues, and reduces the amount of fat produced. The cost of the 1st session is 1500-3000 rubles.
Traditional methods
Popular remedies for excess fat in the root zone, which our grandmothers used, are rinsing with decoctions of nettle and oak bark (50 g per 1 liter of water, boil for 10 minutes, cool), a solution of vinegar (1 tbsp apple per 1 liter of cool water ) or lemon juice (prepare like vinegar). They were used after the main shampoo, which was carried out using rye bread and tar soap. The following also give good results:
- masks on blue clay, egg with honey, mustard powder;
- salt peeling.
Masks at home
To improve the water-lipid balance, trichologists advise supplementing home treatment with masks based on natural products.. Yeast, lemon juice, chicken eggs, colorless henna, mustard powder, clay, kefir and yogurt have proven themselves to be excellent. Keep in mind that you need to prepare a fresh mask every time; excess is thrown away and not stored. The simplest recipes:
- Whisk the egg yolk, add 1 tsp. water and cognac. Rub into the roots with massage movements, cover with film, insulate with a towel. Wash off after an hour. The mask stops hair loss and strengthens the hair bulbs. You can use it 2 times a week.
- Dilute dry yeast with warm water (for 1 tablespoon of powder, 3 tablespoons of liquid). When the fermentation process begins (after 10-15 minutes), add the whisked egg white. Rub the resulting mixture into the roots for 2 minutes and leave until completely dry. Apply 10 times with an interval of 4 days.
Blue clay
Normalization of metabolic processes in the epidermis, narrowing of pores and reducing the activity of sebum secretion, reducing the severity of the inflammatory process are the main qualities of blue clay. In addition to combating oily scalp, it is also used to treat fungal diseases, as it is a good antiseptic. The principle of application is as follows:
- Mix clay with warm boiled water in such a proportion to obtain a thick mass. The approximate amount of clay per time is 4-5 tbsp. l.
- Rub into the root zone with massage movements.
- After half an hour, rinse off under running water. Repeat the procedure once a week, the course of treatment is 2 months.
Tar soap
For dandruff and oily seborrhea, you can resort to a product that has a powerful antibacterial and drying effect - this is tar soap. If your hair is extremely dry, you should pre-treat the length with jojoba oil, otherwise you won’t be able to comb it afterwards. To control the oiliness of the dermis and the activity of the sebaceous glands, you should hold a bar of soap in 1 liter of warm water and remove it after 20 minutes. Foam the liquid and wash your hair with the resulting solution. The procedure is carried out 3 times a week until complete healing; balms/conditioners are not used afterwards.
Alcohol tinctures
Excessive activity of the sebaceous glands can be affected by herbal tinctures with alcohol, which has drying and antiseptic qualities, improves blood circulation, and cleanses. You can prepare the necessary product yourself by pouring alcohol into the raw materials (10:1) and leaving for 2 weeks. An easier way is to buy it at a pharmacy. The most effective options:
- Pour 10 g of calendula flowers into 100 ml of vodka, leave for 10 days in a dark place. Strain. Take 2 tbsp. l. products, dilute in 1 liter of cool water, use to rinse hair after each shampoo. The duration of use is not limited.
- Pour 2 tbsp. l. horsetail with vodka (200 ml), leave for 14 days. Rub 1 tsp into the root zone 2 times a week. products, massaging your head for a couple of minutes. Do not rinse off.

Comprehensive care for oily hair consists of the use of special shampoos and lotions, therapeutic measures (mesotherapy, darsonvalization, application of masks, serums, herbal preparations, etc. Read also: Daily proper care for long hair.
Oily hair is a problem for more than 40% of our planet's population. Because of this problem, people feel insecure, because just a few hours after washing their hair and styling their hair begins to become dirty, and its appearance becomes unaesthetic. However, oily scalp is not a death sentence. Correctly selected treatment and proper care will quickly solve this problem.
Why does the scalp become oily?
- difficulties in the functioning of the thyroid gland;
- body contaminated with waste and toxins;
- disorders of the psycho-emotional environment;
- gastrointestinal ailments;
- unbalanced diet;
- excessive sebum production;
- hormonal imbalances;
- lack of basic scalp and hair care;
- high air humidity, hot weather;
- seborrhea;
- use of low-quality cosmetics;
- constant exposure to stress;
- lack of sleep and frequent anxiety.
Oily scalp: treatment and care
Treatment for oily scalp should begin with a visit to the doctor. He will examine you, collect the necessary tests, make a diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. If you have a disease that requires serious treatment, most likely your doctor will suggest you go to the hospital. And if you don’t have any diseases leading to a malfunction of the sebaceous glands, then he will probably prescribe a course of medications for you to drink and give recommendations for caring for your scalp and hair, which will certainly include homemade masks made from natural ingredients that will help normalize the work sebaceous glands.
Oily hair is a problem comparable only to dandruff: like dandruff, this unpleasant little thing can cause a lot of trouble. Due to the fact that already on the second or third day after a shower, your hair looks unkempt and dirty, you have to wash your hair every day. The styling does not last longer than a few hours. It is impossible to engage in active sports, go hiking and travel out of town: the hairstyle immediately loses its shape and does not look aesthetically pleasing. And yet, oily scalp is not a death sentence! Proper care and treatment will definitely give a positive result. You just need to regularly take time for yourself and deal with the symptoms.
What is happening to our body?
In happy owners of normal skin type, the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, work moderately actively. An invisible protective film forms on the surface of the head, maintaining the balance necessary for cell life. But with the oily type, the sebaceous glands secrete too much sebum. If your scalp is also flaky and itchy, and your hair is falling out a lot, there are symptoms of a real skin disease. It's called oily seborrhea.
Ways to solve oily hair problems
If you decide to tidy up your oily scalp, treating the root causes is the best solution. Consult a dermatologist or trichologist: hormonal imbalances, unbalanced nutrition or stress may be to blame. If you haven't had an oily scalp problem before, check to see if your usual hair care products are causing irritation to the sebaceous glands. To avoid stimulating the formation of oil, wash your hair with lukewarm water. Avoid touching your skin when combing. Don't massage your head. Apply shampoo two to three times to the hair roots and only once to the middle and ends: as a rule, they are much oilier at the roots. If you wash your hair equally thoroughly along the entire length, you can dry out the ends.
Has your doctor diagnosed you with a disease and prescribed treatment for oily seborrhea of the scalp? In parallel with the course of tablets, we recommend making masks and rinses: after washing your hair, rinse your hair with boiled water and lemon juice (1 lemon per two liters) or chamomile decoction (pour a handful of flowers with two liters of boiling water, let it brew, strain).
It is advisable to choose a gentle shampoo for oily scalp. The packaging must have a special inscription: “suitable for frequent use.” Try liquids with various herbal additives: juniper, burdock, algae. Balms and conditioners, as a rule, only aggravate the problem. But regular homemade masks for oily scalp give good results, especially in the initial stages. We offer several folk recipes. Please note: masks should be applied directly to the skin, not the hair, otherwise it will become dry and dull.
- Made from mustard and onion juice. Dilute two teaspoons of mustard powder in hot water until sour cream thickens. Add fresh juice of one onion, 1 tbsp. spoon of aloe juice, 1 yolk, tbsp. a spoonful of honey. You can also add liquid vitamins B1 and B6 (one ampoule each). Apply the mask, put on a plastic cap on top and wrap with a towel. After an hour, wash off with shampoo. Make a mask once every 7-10 days for at least a month.
- Made from lemon and vodka. Mix fresh juice of one lemon with 200 grams of vodka. Apply a small amount of liquid daily to the skin and hair roots, do not rinse.
- From bread and eggs. A good treatment for oily seborrhea of the scalp at the initial stage. Grind the rye bread and dissolve it in hot water until it becomes a thick paste. Beat and add one egg, a few cloves of chopped garlic. The resulting mixture should be gently rubbed into the scalp, left for 20 minutes, then rinsed with shampoo.
Treatment for oily scalp
To cope with oily seborrhea, you can resort to a number of traditional methods. It is allowed to take any action only after agreement with a specialist.
- The main task remains the adjustment and preparation of proper nutrition. Include more dairy products, fruits, vegetables, eggs and cereals in your daily diet.
- To get rid of the problem, it is recommended to limit your intake of sweet, salty and spicy foods.
- If your skin is oily, you need to take zinc complexes. Moreover, consumption must be systematic. Vitamins B, D, tocopherol, and retinol will also help.
- In frequent cases, seborrhea occurs due to hormonal problems. Get tested. If necessary, carry out complex treatment.
- It is important to identify the presence of possible ailments with the gastrointestinal tract. Cure diseases if present. Seborrhea can occur against this background.
- You can combat fatness with the help of targeted medical products. Most often these are all kinds of sprays, ointments, lotions, gels and serums.
- In special cases, with an advanced disease, a specialist may prescribe antifungal medications. Physiotherapeutic procedures also help prevent seborrhea.
- More often these include sedative technology, mesotherapy, bactericidal technique, immunocorrective procedure and ozone therapy.
Why does hair get oily quickly?
Rapid hair contamination occurs due to excessive work of the sebaceous glands, which produce large quantities of sebum. For some, they work normally, but for others, on the contrary, the sebaceous glands do not cope with their work for some reason and their hair becomes dry and brittle.
Oily scalp only indicates that there is a malfunction of the sebaceous glands and urgent treatment is necessary. And before treating and normalizing sebum production, it is necessary to establish the cause that led to this problem. And for this you need to visit a doctor and undergo a full examination. Perhaps the cause of the malfunction of the sebaceous glands is some disease that may be asymptomatic, and you may not even be aware of its presence.
It is necessary to treat the scalp, because if you start this process, there is a high probability of the formation of oily seborrhea, in which not only rapid greasy hair is observed, but also hair loss, peeling of the skin, accompanied by severe itching. And all this destroys the protective film on the scalp, which allows the infection to easily penetrate it and begin to develop.
Oily skin and hormonal levels
Oily skin is characterized by increased activity of the sebaceous glands, which is largely regulated by sex hormones. This is due to the fact that in youth, during the period of highest levels of sex hormones, the skin is oilier. As you age, both hormone levels and skin oiliness decrease. The sebaceous glands react to changes in hormonal levels in all people, but the degree of their sensitivity varies from person to person and is determined genetically. Therefore, with the same level of hormones, different people will have different skin oiliness.
Women may experience pronounced changes in skin oiliness depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle during pregnancy.
Oily skin: homemade masks
Treatment must be comprehensive, and masks must be done regularly. They will cleanse the skin of sebaceous deposits and provide the hair with all the necessary minerals and vitamins that it does not receive.
In order for masks to be beneficial and not harmful, they should be rubbed into the scalp and not applied over the entire length of the hair, as they can dry it out.
- Mustard mask
A very good product, it not only helps fight increased sebum production, but also allows you to speed up metabolic processes in cells, improving blood circulation. And since it has a warming effect, dormant follicles are awakened, due to which the hair becomes thicker and begins to grow better. It is not recommended to make such a mask more than once a week. The course of treatment is 2 months.
To prepare a mustard mask you will need:
- mustard powder – 2 tsp;
- juice of one medium-sized onion;
- aloe juice – 1 tbsp. l.;
- honey - 1 tbsp. l.;
- egg yolk – 1 pc.
Mustard powder should be diluted with warm water until a thick mass is formed, which is similar in consistency to sour cream. Next, you need to mix the resulting mixture with the rest of the ingredients and apply it to the scalp. We warn you right away, the mustard mask “bake” very strongly, so do not overexpose it, otherwise you risk getting burned. It should be kept for no more than 15 minutes. Then you need to rinse your hair with plenty of warm water and shampoo. Balms and conditioners cannot be used, as they only aggravate the current situation.
- Lemon mask
This mask is also very effective. To prepare it, you need to mix 200 g of vodka with the juice of one lemon. And the resulting liquid should be rubbed into the scalp daily. You cannot wash off the mask. The remaining liquid can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. This mask must be made for 1 month.
- Bread mask
Treatment of the scalp can also be done with a bread mask; it is also very effective and gives good results with regular use. It must be done in courses: 2 times a week for 3 months.
To prepare it, you will need to beat one egg with a mixer, add rye bread, previously diluted in water until a paste forms, and a couple of cloves of chopped garlic. The mixture is rubbed into the scalp and left for 20 minutes. Then wash off with warm water using shampoo.
Eliminating oily scalp is not so difficult, and in order for the treatment to be effective, you must follow all the doctor’s recommendations.
Recommendations for caring for oily scalp
- do not dry the mop with a hairdryer;
- wash your hair with cool filtered water;
- exclude any exposure to high temperatures on the dermis;
- wear a hat (not synthetic) in summer and winter;
- exclude tight hairstyles and complex styling;
- stop using stylers;
- cut your hair if it is long during the period of oiliness treatment;
- do not use hot curlers, Velcro, straighteners, or curling irons;
- give up addictions;
- Do not massage your head during therapy;
- exclude sweets, fatty and salty foods from your diet;
- do not dye your hair roots;
- do not perm;
- choose cosmetics taking into account the problem (oily content, dandruff);
- do not comb your hair too often;
- drink more water, eat nuts and berries;
- do not allow the comb to come into contact with the scalp while combing;
- Don't wear metal hair accessories.
Care products for oily scalp
To solve the problem, you need to pay attention to basic cosmetics for scalp and hair care.
Shampoo
- If possible, buy shampoo at a pharmacy. Choose a mild detergent without sulfates, silicone, parabens and other aggressive ingredients. Give preference to shampoos with a transparent texture.
- Choose professional series cosmetics. As a rule, conscientious manufacturers value their reputation and try to produce as many natural shampoos as possible.
- Before purchasing, carefully read the “Ingredients” section. It should not contain prohibited ingredients. You can supplement store-bought shampoo with essential oil (5 drops per 100 ml).
- Buy shampoo based on your scalp type. Do not buy a product for dry strands because it has the ability to weigh down your hair.
- If oily skin is accompanied by dandruff, use medicinal shampoos from the pharmacy. Take a course of multivitamins for hair to approach the problem in a comprehensive manner.
- Contrary to popular belief, shampoo does not need to be changed every 2 weeks. One type of product is used for at least 2 months.
Dry shampoo
- Dry powder shampoo is a great find for those with oily scalps. There is no need to wash your hair if only the dermis is dirty. Dry shampoo is an emergency product.
- The product is available in spray form and is a powder composition. After being distributed onto the scalp, small particles absorb sebum, as a result of which the hairstyle looks neat and not “sleek.”
- The cosmetics market is overflowing with a variety of dry shampoo options. It all depends on the size of the wallet. However, you can use a more affordable product - fragrance-free talc.
- An alternative is considered to be first grade wheat flour or corn/potato starch. The method of use is simple - apply to the scalp, rub in, comb out with a comb or blow out with a hairdryer.
- It is important to understand that dry shampoo is not a replacement for regular washing. It should only be used rarely. The composition has a white tint and can be noticeable on the hair.
Balm
- The use of air conditioners must be strictly dosed. Do not distribute the balm over the scalp; step back from the root zone by 2 fingers. Apply only to hair if it is dry and difficult to comb.
- Never use 2-in-1 products, they are less effective. Such products consist of sulfates, parabens and silicone. All components have a detrimental effect on hair health.
- If you use shampoo and conditioner separately, you will increase the effectiveness by 150-200%. At the same time, you can use leave-in conditioners.
Washing head
- There are a lot of misconceptions and myths associated with washing oily scalp and hair in particular. Some people believe that frequent procedures will help get rid of greasiness. Others, on the contrary, wash their hair rarely, trying to “knock out a wedge with a wedge.”
- Both actions are extremely wrong. It is necessary to wash your hair as it gets dirty. Moreover, the main thing here is regularity, not daily occurrence.
- With frequent washing, the sebaceous glands begin to work harder. The situation is aggravated by hard running water and low-quality hair cosmetics.
- With infrequent and insufficient washing, the skin pores become clogged and oil cannot come to the surface. Again, this makes it difficult for the dermis to cleanse itself naturally.
- The ideal solution is to wash your hair after getting dirty in the morning, when the sebaceous glands work slowly. Eliminate daily washing completely. Determine the frequency of the procedure empirically.

Video: Oily scalp: causes
Oily hair is a problem for more than 40% of our planet's population. Because of this problem, people feel insecure, because just a few hours after washing their hair and styling their hair begins to become dirty, and its appearance becomes unaesthetic. However, oily scalp is not a death sentence. Correctly selected treatment and proper care will quickly solve this problem.
If your scalp has become noticeably oilier and becomes dirty more quickly, you should pay close attention to the problem and be examined for diseases.
Causes
Oily scalp can be “transmitted” to a person at the genetic level. However, this happens quite rarely. Very often this problem is provoked by the following factors:
- stress;
- chronic infectious diseases;
- pathologies of the thyroid gland;
- abuse of sweet, spicy and salty foods;
- lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet;
- disruption of the gastrointestinal tract;
- frequent lack of sleep;
- hormonal disorders;
- vegetative-vascular dystonia;
- failure to comply with personal hygiene rules.
It is impossible to determine “by eye” the reason for the increased work of the sebaceous glands, and its elimination is simply necessary in order for the treatment of the scalp to be effective.
You can prepare a remedy for oily skin using lemon juice, but you need to use it with extreme caution.
How to treat?
Treatment for oily scalp should begin with a visit to the doctor. He will examine you, collect the necessary tests, make a diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. If you have a disease that requires serious treatment, most likely your doctor will suggest you go to the hospital. And if you don’t have any diseases leading to a malfunction of the sebaceous glands, then he will probably prescribe a course of medications for you to drink and give recommendations for caring for your scalp and hair, which will certainly include homemade masks made from natural ingredients that will help normalize the work sebaceous glands.
Oily scalp: homemade masks
Treatment must be comprehensive, and masks must be done regularly. They will cleanse the skin of sebaceous deposits and provide the hair with all the necessary minerals and vitamins that it does not receive.
In order for masks to be beneficial and not harmful, they should be rubbed into the scalp and not applied over the entire length of the hair, as they can dry it out.
Mustard mask
A very good product, it not only helps fight increased sebum production, but also allows you to speed up metabolic processes in cells, improving blood circulation. And since it has a warming effect, dormant follicles are awakened, due to which the hair becomes thicker and begins to grow better. It is not recommended to make such a mask more than once a week. The course of treatment is 2 months.
To prepare a mustard mask you will need:
- mustard powder – 2 tsp;
- juice of one medium-sized onion;
- aloe juice – 1 tbsp. l.;
- honey - 1 tbsp. l.;
Lemon mask
This mask is also very effective. To prepare it, you need to mix 200 g of vodka with the juice of one lemon. And the resulting liquid should be rubbed into the scalp daily. You cannot wash off the mask. The remaining liquid can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. This mask must be made for 1 month.
Bread mask
