Keratoplasty Total

Keratoplasty is an operation aimed at restoring the cornea if it is damaged after injury, burns or aggressive external influences (atrophy, opacities). There are three types of keratoplasty – partial, subtotal and total. Partial (pars plana) is performed for minor damage to the cornea, such as corneal trauma. It is performed through a micro-incision in the cornea using a special surgical instrument, a scalpel. Since the cornea is located under the eyelid, there is no way to see its surface to determine the amount of correction required. The surgeon feels the cornea through a spatula to understand exactly what kind of removal is needed to correct the defect.
