A double kidney, or a bifurcated kidney (lat. ren duplex) is a kidney formed from both primary shelves (at the level of the confluence of the second and third ureteric arches). It is often a developmental anomaly, since if in the early stages of embryogenesis one of the two kidneys is located above the other, then the lower one is compressed by the caudally moving and developing kidney. It manifests itself as pain in the lumbar region, lower abdomen and hypochondrium. Treatment depends on the patient’s age, stage of the pathological process and its severity.
