Intestinal irrigation (lavage) underwater (irrigation of the large intestine under pressure) is a therapeutic manipulation in the treatment of certain pathological conditions in diseases of the colon and rectum.
The procedure involves the use of a canister connected to an inflatable rubber chamber filled with medication. The inflatable chamber is placed into the anus to a depth of 20-30 cm and then inflated. By inflating, the chamber creates pressure in the intestine and facilitates the passage of medications through the anal canal. The procedure takes from 2 to 4 minutes. Emptying the rectum is mandatory after the procedure.
