Pathology
The pterygoid film is a single-layer squamous epithelium of cylindrical cells that lines the walls of the vestibule and the entrance to the vaginal cavity in women. Develops from the remnants of the Müllerian ducts. The epithelium shallowly covers the intertubercular fold, located on either side of the entrance to the vagina, separating the anterior and posterior lips of the vestibule. Covers the entrance to a woman’s vagina and interferes with the movement of sperm during sexual intercourse. Usually it is a physiological formation, but in some patients there is excessive “excess” or an abnormal structure affecting the skin of the vestibule of the genital organ.
