Laktodel: description, indications for use and side effects

Laktodel is a drug containing the active ingredient bromocriptine. This drug belongs to the group of dopaminergic drugs and is used to treat various diseases.

Production and titles:

Laktodel is manufactured by Amun Pharmaceutical Industries Co. in Egypt. It is also known by the international name bromocriptine and has several synonyms including Abergyn, Apo-Bromocriptine, Bromocriptine Poly, Bromocriptine Richter, Bromergon, Lactodel, Parlodel and Serocriptine.

Dosage form and composition:

Laktodel is presented in the form of tablets containing 2.5 mg bromocriptine. The active substance bromocriptine belongs to the group of dopaminergic agents and acts on dopamine receptors in the pituitary gland, which leads to a decrease in the release of prolactin.

Indications for use:

Laktodel is used to treat the following diseases:

  1. hyperprolactinemia (increased levels of prolactin in the blood);
  2. infertility and dysmenorrhea due to hyperproduction of prolactin;
  3. postpartum lactation;
  4. benign nodular or cystic changes in the mammary glands;
  5. acromegaly (excessive skeletal growth) and other diseases associated with overproduction of prolactin;
  6. parkinsonism.

Contraindications and restrictions for use:

Laktodel should not be used in cases of hypotension (low blood pressure), hypersensitivity to bromocriptine, recent myocardial infarction or severe cardiac arrhythmias, or in patients with mental illness. Also, the drug is not recommended for erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract and in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Side effects:

Laktodel may cause the following side effects:

  1. nausea and vomiting;
  2. constipation;
  3. decreased blood pressure;
  4. whitening of fingers and toes when cooling;
  5. headache;
  6. swelling of the mucous membranes;
  7. orthostatic hypotension;
  8. collapse.

Interaction with other drugs:

Laktodel is incompatible with MAO inhibitors and alcohol. Its use may reduce the effect of antipsychotics and oral contraceptives, as well as reduce akinesia caused by reserpine. The simultaneous use of Lactodel with other dopaminergic agents such as levodopa, amphetamine and dopamine should also be avoided, as this may lead to an increase in their effects.

Dosage and method of application:

The dosage of Laktodel and the method of its use depend on the nature of the disease and the patient’s response to the drug. Usually the drug is taken orally after meals 1-2 times a day at a dose of 2.5-5 mg. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 30 mg.

Conclusion:

Laktodel is a dopaminergic agent used to treat various diseases associated with prolactin overproduction. The drug has a number of side effects and restrictions on its use, so it should be used only as prescribed by a doctor and under his supervision.
