Leiomyoma Metastatic

Metastatic leiomyoma is a rare form of benign uterine tumor that can give distant metastases.

Leiomyoma (fibromyoma) is a benign tumor consisting of smooth muscle tissue. Typically, leiomyoma is localized in the uterus and does not metastasize. However, in rare cases, metastasis of leiomyoma is possible.

The causes of metastatic leiomyoma are not completely clear. It is assumed that metastasis may be associated with changes in the biological properties of the tumor. Metastasis can also be affected by surgery, which releases tumor cells into the bloodstream.

Most often, leiomyoma metastases are localized in the lungs, less often in bones, soft tissues and other organs. Clinical manifestations depend on the location and size of metastases.

Diagnosis of metastatic leiomyoma includes histological examination of metastases, which confirms their origin from the smooth muscle tissue of the uterus.

Treatment consists of surgical removal of metastases. The prognosis for metastatic leiomyoma is favorable, since the tumor remains benign.
