Leuprorelin is a synthetic analogue of luteinizing hormone that is used to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis and other hormone-dependent diseases. It suppresses the production of sex hormones - estrogen in women and testosterone in men. This allows the growth of tumors that are sensitive to these hormones to slow down.

Leuprorelin is given by injection at intervals of 1, 3 or 6 months. At first it stimulates the production of sex hormones, but then suppresses it. Side effects include hot flashes, decreased libido, impotence, and osteoporosis. After leuprorelin is discontinued, hormone levels are restored.
