Shingles

Shingles or herpes zoster is one of the most common skin diseases. It most often appears on the back of the neck, back and chest, but can occur in other places. Herpes zoster is caused by the herpes virus VZ, which can live in the human body for years without symptoms.

Like other herpes viruses, shingles is transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets. It can also be passed from mother to child during childbirth. In some cases, however, the virus may result from an infection such as a cold or flu. Some people may get shingles after vaccination.
