Menisci

A meniscocyte is a type of cartilage cell. The name comes from the Greek words "meniskos" - crescent-shaped and "cytus" - cell.

Meniscocytes have an elongated spindle-shaped or crescent-shaped shape. They are located in the intercellular substance of the cartilage parallel to its surface. Meniscocytes perform a supporting and trophic function, providing nutrition to cartilage tissue.

Because of their shape, meniscocytes are ideally suited to perform the mechanical function of withstanding loads and deformations of cartilage tissue. Thanks to meniscocytes, cartilage has flexibility and elasticity.
