Microcyte

A microcyte is an abnormally small red blood cell (erythrocyte).

Microcytes are formed in various diseases, leading to impaired hemoglobin synthesis and a decrease in the size of red blood cells. Such diseases include iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies.

With a high content of microcytes in the blood, microcytosis develops - a pathological condition characterized by a predominance of small red blood cells. Microcytosis is characterized by a decrease in mean erythrocyte volume (MCV) and mean erythrocyte hemoglobin concentration (MCH).

Microcytic is a small-sized red blood cell. Thus, microcytic red blood cells are microcytes.
