Mote Operation
In 1902, the French ophthalmologist Mothe (E. Motais) performed the first eye surgery, which he called the Mothe operation. This operation consisted of removing some outgrowth of the iris - a spur - from a patient suffering from glaucoma and having a lag between the cornea and the iris. The consequence of the operation was improved vision and cessation of the drop in intraocular pressure. In practical medicine this was a great success; Many patients were and continue to be relieved thanks to this operation from the sufferer, and also improved their vision. It is interesting that during the operation itself, the patient’s eye was illuminated with a mercury apparatus, and only many years later did it become clear what was going on here.
