Muscles of the Head and Neck

The muscles of the head, usually small in size, are divided into two groups:

  1. Facial (facial) muscles are attached to the bones and skin of the face. With the help of the orbicularis oculi muscles, the buccal muscles or the muscles that raise and lower the corners of the mouth, we can assume different facial expressions and show our mood.

  2. Masticatory muscles: allow the lower jaw to move, thereby allowing food to be chewed.

The neck muscles, thick and strong, perform one main function - they cover the bones connecting the head to the body and provide a variety of head movements. The sternocleidomastoid muscle, located on both sides of the neck, tilts and rotates the head, while the trapezius muscle connects the head to some vertebrae and ribs.
