Nasopharynx (Nasopharynx, Rhinopharynx)

Nasopharynx (Nasopharynx, Rhinopharynx) - the upper part of the pharynx, located at the level of the choanae. The nasopharynx is located behind the nasal cavity and communicates with it through the choanae.

The walls of the nasopharynx are formed:

  1. Above - the base of the skull.
  2. On the sides - the auditory tubes and superior tonsils.
  3. In front are the choanae, through which the nasopharynx communicates with the nasal cavity.
  4. Posteriorly, the nasopharynx passes into the oral part of the pharynx.

Main functions of the nasopharynx:

  1. Conduction of air from the nasal cavity to the underlying sections of the respiratory tract.
  2. Participation in the resonance of sounds during speech.
  3. Participation in thermoregulation processes.
  4. Protection of the upper respiratory tract from foreign particles and microorganisms.

Thus, the nasopharynx plays an important role in breathing, speech, thermoregulation and protection of the upper respiratory tract.

Nasopharynx (Nasopharynx, Rhinopharynx) - the upper part of the pharynx, located at the level of the choanae.

The nasopharynx is a cavity communicating with the nasal cavity through the choanae. It extends from the base of the skull to the soft palate and is limited laterally by the posterior openings of the nasal cavity (choanae), above by the base of the skull, and below by the soft palate.

The walls of the nasopharynx are lined with mucous membrane covered with ciliated epithelium. In the mucous membrane there are lymphoid accumulations that form the Waldeyer-Pirogov lymphoepithelial pharyngeal ring.

The nasopharynx performs respiratory and protective functions, and is also involved in the processes of speech and swallowing. Through the nasopharynx there is communication between the nasal cavity and the nasal part of the pharynx.

What is the nasopharynx?

The word nasopharynx has two meanings. * The first meaning is the **upper part of the pharynx**, located in the region of the nasolacral canal and choanae in humans and mammals, as well as the oropharynx, nasal passages and oral cavity. The structure of the nasopharynx includes the following parts: the nasal cavity, the nasolacrimal duct, the nasopharyngeal passage and the protrusion of the mucous membrane - adenoid tissue. * In the second meaning, **nasopharynx** is the name of the organs with which living organisms are endowed as parasites. These are parasitic mites,
