Nephrostomy

Nephrostomy (nephrostomy) is the creation of a new external fistula canal between the renal pelvis and the lumen of the urinary ureter. The main goal of the procedure is to normalize the flow of urine from the kidney. Typically this method is used to treat chronic renal failure.

Nephrostomy is performed in a hospital setting using fluoroscopy. Most often, the operation is performed using a Foley catheter using the transcutaneous method.
