Infantile Spinal Paralysis

Infantile spinal paralysis (paralysis infantilis spinalis) is a disease characterized by damage to the motor neurons of the spinal cord, which leads to the development of motor and speech disorders.

Causes:

  1. Damage to the spinal cord in the prenatal period due to infections, toxicosis of pregnancy.
  2. Asphyxia and trauma during childbirth.
  3. Infections and injuries in the first months of a child's life.

Clinical manifestations:

  1. Violation of muscle tone - increased (spasticity) or decreased (hypotonia).
  2. Impaired motor functions - paresis and paralysis of the limbs, impaired coordination of movements.
  3. Impaired speech, vision, hearing, intelligence.
  4. Disorders of the pelvic organs.

Diagnosis is based on the clinical picture, EMG data, MRI of the brain and spinal cord.

Treatment includes drug therapy, physiotherapy, exercise therapy, massage, orthopedic correction, and, if necessary, surgical interventions.

The prognosis depends on the severity of damage to the nervous system. With early comprehensive treatment, it is possible to achieve compensation and adaptation of the child to the environment.
