Perennials

Perennials are plants that live for several (sometimes very many) years.

A distinctive feature of perennials is that their aboveground part dies off in the fall, and renewal buds are located near the surface of the soil and persist in winter. In spring, a new aerial part grows from the renewal buds. Thus, perennial plants are able to survive an unfavorable period and continue growing for many years.

Perennial plants include herbaceous (for example, meadow and garden flowers), shrubby (lilac, roses) and woody (trees and shrubs) plants. Perennials are widely used in gardening and landscape design due to their long decorative period.
