Phacomalacia

What is phacomalacia?

Phacomalacia is a deformation of the shape of the macular area in an aphakic eye, which occurs after removal of the lens during cataract surgery or due to incorrect selection of glasses in a person suffering from myopia. The deformity may be asymptomatic, but is usually accompanied by decreased vision. In case of compensated myopia, changing the size and shape of the spot is carried out without surgery; in other cases, phacoemulsification with implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) is required.

Under various circumstances, changes in the shape of the macula of the eye are observed:

* In case of previous injuries to the tissues of the posterior segment of the eye.

* with dislocations and subluxations of the lens into the eye cavity;

* presence of diabetic retinopathy (complication
