Phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis: what is it and how to treat them

Phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis are diseases associated with the formation of blood clots (blood clots) in the veins of the human body. Thrombophlebitis is inflammation of the venous wall and the formation of a blood clot in the lumen of the vein, and phlebothrombosis is the formation of a blood clot fixed to the vein wall, completely or partially obstructing the vessel with the addition of inflammatory changes in the venous wall. Although the pathogenesis of these diseases is very similar, phlebothrombosis usually refers to damage to the deep veins, and thrombophlebitis to damage to the superficial veins.

The main causes of phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis are associated with changes in the inner wall of the vessel, increased blood clotting and slower blood flow. These factors especially often arise in the postoperative period in the deep veins of the lower extremities and pelvic veins. At the same time, varicose veins represent “fertile ground” for the development of thrombosis, because changes in the vascular wall and slowing of blood flow are important causes of thrombus formation.

The clinical picture of phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis includes pain of varying intensity in the affected limb. On examination, a stripe of redness and thickening of the venous wall is noted. In some cases, there may be swelling of the affected limb and increased body temperature. In addition, when a blood clot breaks off, pulmonary embolism may occur, which poses a threat to the patient's life.

Various methods are used to diagnose phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis, including ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment usually involves the use of anticoagulants, which help prevent further blood clots and reduce the risk of thromboembolism. In addition, patients may be prescribed compression therapy and recommended to limit physical activity.

In general, phlebothrombosis and thrombophlebitis are serious diseases that can lead to serious consequences. If you suspect these conditions, consult your doctor for professional advice and treatment.
