Pleurisy is an inflammatory process in the pleural membranes, characterized by the formation of internal effusion fluid between the pleural layers. Pleural effusion fluid serves as a synovial lubricant. A common misconception about pleurisy is that during the disease process, fluid accumulates inside the abdominal cavity, between the internal organs. The inflammatory process during pleurisy affects the superficial layer of the pleura. The fibrils of the outer layer are located on the same leaf, so the accumulation of fluid or blood between them is a reliable sign of a dangerous complication of the underlying disease.
