Polymenorrhea

Polymenorrhea: causes, symptoms and treatment

Polymenorrhea is a condition in which a woman has periods that are too frequent, that is, more than every 21 days. A normal menstrual cycle lasts from 21 to 35 days, and if it occurs more than once every 21 days, it may be a sign of polymenorrhea. This condition can be caused by a variety of reasons, including hormonal changes, abnormalities of the uterus or ovaries, and certain medications.

Causes of polymenorrhea

One of the main causes of polymenorrhea are hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia and others. Polymenorrhea can also be caused by abnormalities of the uterus or ovaries, such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, polyps or ovarian tumors. Some medications, such as hormonal contraceptives, can cause polymenorrhea as a side effect.

Symptoms of polymenorrhea

The main symptom of polymenorrhea is the frequent occurrence of menstruation, which can occur every 21 days or more often. Other symptoms may include lower abdominal pain, bleeding between periods, heavy or prolonged bleeding during periods, fatigue and anemia.

Treatment of polymenorrhea

Treatment of polymenorrhea depends on the cause of its occurrence. If hormonal imbalances are the cause, your doctor may prescribe hormone therapy to correct the hormone imbalance. If abnormalities of the uterus or ovaries cause polymenorrhea, surgery such as removal of a tumor or polyp may be required. If the cause is not determined or cannot be treated, your doctor may recommend the use of birth control to reduce the frequency of menstruation.

In general, polymenorrhea is a condition that requires medical advice. If you suspect polymenorrhea, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. In most cases, polymenorrhea can be successfully treated, and the woman can return to her normal menstrual cycle and life without painful symptoms.
