The leaves of the basal rosette have long petioles and are irregularly deeply dissected. Young leaves are also heavily pubescent. The lumbago blooms from March to May.

Lumbago contains several active ingredients, including protoanemonin, saponins and tannins. Protoanemonin is a strong poison and can cause blisters on the skin and mucous membranes. However, when the plant is dried, protoanemonin is converted into the less toxic anemonin.
