Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the facial skin that usually occurs in middle-aged and elderly people.
Causes
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. Factors such as disturbances in the functioning of blood vessels, dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract, metabolic disorders, and increased sensitivity of skin cells to external irritants are considered.
Symptoms
-
Redness of the facial skin in the form of diffuse erythema, most often on the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose.
-
The appearance of small nodules and pustules against a background of redness.
-
Dilation of small blood vessels (telangiectasia).
-
Itching and burning of the skin.
-
Thickening of the skin of the nose (rhinophyma).
Diagnostics
The diagnosis is made based on the characteristic clinical picture. Blood tests may be needed to rule out other conditions.
Treatment
-
Avoid provoking factors - ultraviolet radiation, temperature changes, hot food and drinks.
-
Antibiotics, primarily tetracyclines, and anti-inflammatory ointments are prescribed.
-
Skin care procedures - cleansing, peeling, cryomassage.
-
Laser and light therapy to reduce redness.
-
In severe forms - surgical treatment.
Forecast
With timely treatment, the prognosis is favorable. However, the disease has a relapsing course.
