Sinemet SR: Antiparkinsonian drug

Sinemet SR is an antiparkinsonian drug used to treat Parkinson's disease and symptomatic parkinsonism. It is produced in the Netherlands by Merck Sharp and Dome, and its international name is Levodopa + Carbidopa. The drug is available in the form of 250 mg tablets containing the active substance - a combination of levodopa and carbidopa.

Sinemet SR is one of the synonyms for this drug and is also known under such names as Dopar 275, Duellin, Zymox, Izikom, Izikom Mite, Carbidopa and Levodopa - Teva, Carbidopa/Levodopa, Levodopa + Carbidopa, Nakom, Sindopa, Sindopa 110, Sindopa 275, Tidomet LS, Tidomet plus, Tidomet forte and Tremonorm.

Sinemet SR contains a combination of levodopa and carbidopa. Levodopa is a precursor to dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of movement. Carbidopa, in turn, prevents the body from breaking down levodopa before it reaches the brain, allowing for a lower dose of levodopa and fewer side effects.

Sinemet SR is used to improve symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors, muscle stiffness and poor coordination. It can also be used for the symptomatic treatment of parkinsonism caused by other causes.

However, Sinemet SR also has a number of contraindications. Its use is not recommended for severe atherosclerosis, hypertension, liver, kidney and blood diseases, glaucoma, melanoma, bronchial asthma, mental illness, as well as in the presence of uncompensated pathology of the cardiovascular, respiratory or endocrine system.

Side effects that may occur with the use of Sinemet SR include choreoathetoid hyperkinesis, arrhythmias, psychotic and paranoid reactions, dyspepsia, dizziness, visual disturbances, hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, alopecia, allergic reactions and ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.

It is necessary to take into account possible interactions of Sinemet SR with other drugs. For example, it may interfere with the effects of antidepressants, anticholinergics, anticoagulants, and some other groups of medications.
