Staphyloma

Staphyloma is an abnormal protrusion of the cornea or sclera that can result from various causes. It can be caused by injuries, infections, inflammatory processes and other diseases.

In the case of corneal staphyloma, it is a growth on the surface of the cornea that can occur after injury or infection. This growth can cause decreased vision and other vision problems.

Treatment for staphyloma depends on its cause and severity. In some cases, surgery may be required.

However, if staphyloma does not cause any health problems, then treatment may not be necessary.

Staphylomas are a fairly rare disease, but a rather unpleasant disease. In general, the cornea has three layers: the epithelial layer, the stroma and the endothelium. If damage to the epithelium occurs and we have an inflammatory process, that is, the stroma is damaged, we will get iridocyclitis and uveitis, but if we also damage the endothelium, which will lead to injury to the vascular network, then we can get a retinal defect. Another option for damage to the layers of the cornea is erosion, which also includes ulcers and age-related opacities. So this something external turns out to be an accumulation of pus. The most common styes and eyelash infections are often the provoking factors. It is clear that both swelling and growth of formation occur here. Moreover, there is also a risk of perforation, after which the inflammation spreads to the lower layer. Depending on where the involvement occurs, anterior, posterior and ring-shaped staphylomas are distinguished. In treatment, it is important to eliminate the root cause, so any eye drops can help in this case. Sodium chloride solution is used for dryness in the eye cavity, brinzolamine ointment has an antihistamine effect to relieve inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with hormones, systemic and local antibiotics are also used. It is important to reassure the patient, exclude any incorrect treatment, and strictly follow the prescribed therapy. The success of treatment directly depends on its timeliness!

Staphyloma is a rare but very dangerous disease of the cornea, accompanied by its bulging. Today, staphyloma is one of the most difficult pathologies to diagnose, even in specialized ophthalmology clinics. There is still no unified treatment regimen for this disease, and therefore there are often cases when the only way to restore good vision is a corneal transplant. There are two types of staphyloma - congenital and acquired. Acquired most often develops after an eye injury or burn. Symptoms of staphyloma: sensation of a foreign body in the eye, pain when blinking, decreased vision.
