A tampon dressing (dressing bag) is a soft pad that is placed on a wound to absorb blood and secretions and to prevent infection from entering the wound. It should be clean, sterile if possible. Any material that can be used to wrap or cover an injured part of the body is used as a bandage. Bandages are commonly used to secure packings, to stop bleeding, to prevent dirt and infection from entering a wound, to support an injured limb or body part, and to apply direct pressure to a wound.
