Azona: an antidepressant from Finland

Azona is an antidepressant produced by the pharmaceutical company Orion Corporation in Finland. The active ingredient of the drug is trazodone, which belongs to the class of selective neuronal uptake inhibitors.

The drug is available in three dosage forms: 25 mg capsules, 50 mg capsules and 100 mg capsules. Azona is used to treat depressive conditions of organic and psychogenic origin, including conditions with severe anxiety. This drug can also be prescribed for the prevention of migraines, anxiety, phobias (including agoraphobia), bulimia, kleptomania, acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome, benzodiazepine dependence and for premedication.

Before starting treatment with Azona, you need to familiarize yourself with contraindications and possible side effects. The drug should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance, the initial period after myocardial infarction, cardiac arrhythmias, severe disorders of liver and kidney function, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When using Azona, side effects may occur, such as changes in vision, eye irritation, nasal congestion, constipation, diarrhea, dry and bitter mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, myalgia, incoordination, paresthesia, disorientation, blackout, tremor, cardiac arrhythmia and conduction disturbances, bradycardia, atrial fibrillation, arterial hypotension with elements of orthostatic hypotension and syncope, leukopenia, neutropenia (usually minor), priapism, allergic edema and allergic skin reactions.

Azona's interaction with other drugs also requires special attention. For example, the use of alcohol and drugs that depress the central nervous system may increase the risk of side effects. In addition, Azona may alter the effect of warfarin, increasing or decreasing it, increase the risk of orthostatic hypotension when using antihypertensive agents, and increase plasma concentrations of digoxin and phenytoin.

In case of Azona overdose, serious side effects may occur, including priapism, ECG changes, increased and fatigued heart rate, seizures, hypotension, coma, and death. If such symptoms occur, you should immediately seek medical help.

Azona is a prescription drug and can only be prescribed by a doctor. Self-medication and changing the dosage without consulting a doctor can lead to negative consequences.

In general, Azona is an effective and safe drug when used correctly and following your doctor's recommendations. However, like any other medication, it has its contraindications and side effects, so you should consult your doctor before using it.
