The sterno-clavicular-mammary region

The sternocleidomastoid region is located in the upper part of the anterior surface of the neck. It is bounded above by the lower edge of the lower jaw, below by the jugular notch of the sternum, and on the sides by the sternocleidomastoid muscles.

This area includes:

  1. Skin with subcutaneous tissue and superficial fascia of the neck
  2. Sternocleidomastoid muscles
  3. The lymph nodes
  4. Jugular fossa

The main anatomical formations of the sternocleidomastoid region are the sternocleidomastoid muscles, which extend from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid process of the temporal bone. They are involved in the movements of the head and neck.

The jugular fossa contains the carotid arteries, internal jugular veins, vagus and phrenic nerves. Through this area you can feel the pulse of the carotid arteries.

Thus, the sternocleidomastoid region has important anatomical and clinical significance.
