Thymoleptics are a class of medications that are used to treat mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. The name comes from two Greek words “thymus” - “gland” and “leptos” - “small”.

Thymoleptics are broad-spectrum antidepressants. They block the reuptake of neurotransmitters, which leads to increased levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system. These drugs also interfere with monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters.

For depression, thymoleptic drugs help reduce feelings of depression and melancholy, improve mood, and also reduce insomnia and appetite. For severe forms of depression, these drugs may reduce suicidality. Thymoleptics can also be used to treat panic attacks and other anxiety conditions.
